The dark red brick Colonial Revival courthouse, located at Church and Anderson streets, was built in 1936 and remodeled in 1969. It was enlarged in 1972 and 2000. United States Highway 341 is three blocks east of the site. Dennis & Dennis are the courthouse architects. A small tower is on the facility and veteran memorials are on the grounds. Peach County was created on July 8, 1924 from Houston and Macon counties as the 159th and final county. Fort Valley has always been the county seat. The county name was derived from the Georgia peach crop. Fort Valley’s name is a misspelling of a local valley, Fox Valley. The county center is 4.6 miles Northeast of Fort Valley.
Peach County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive). It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.) Sixteen Superior Court Judges serve Peach, Bibb, Chattahoochee, Crawford, Harris, Houston, Lee, Macon, Marion, Muscogee, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, and Webster counties and Six County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Peach County (judicial.) The county is in central Georgia immediately southwest of Macon, Georgia and east of Columbus, Georgia. The county is surrounded clockwise by Bibb, Houston, Crawford, Taylor, and Macon counties.
The area of the county is 151 square miles. It is 155 out of 159 counties in the state. It ranks 66 out of 159 in population in the state. It has a density of 185.4 persons per square mile making it 36 out of 159 in the state. Peach County has 54.1% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 75 crosses the eastern part of the county north to south from Bibb County to Houston County. United States Highway 341 enters the county from the northwest, Crawford County, and exiting to the southeast, Houston County. The county is a triangle shape. Fort Valley is in the southwest corner of the county. Fort Valley is the county seat and the largest city. It is 31.4% of the county population. This county is in the Fort Valley Micropolitan Statistical Area.
