The Modern style brown/red brick design was created in 1985.  It is on Solomon Street between Hill and 6th streets.  It is two blocks north of United States Highway 19.  There were also 1859 and 1911 courthouses in the county.  Bilbro, Spandler, & Manly were the building designers.  The facility features a tower with a working clock.  An Annex is across the street.  Spalding County was established on December 20, 1851 from Fayette, Henry and Pike counties as the 95th county.  Griffin has always been the county seat.  Senator Thomas Spalding provided the inspiration for the county’s name.  Railroad officer Lewis Lawrence Griffin was the source name for the county seat.  The county center is in Griffin 1 mile Northwest of the city center. 

Spalding County government consists of a manager, a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Eighteen Superior Court Judges serve Spalding, Butts, Carroll, Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Heard, Henry, Lamar, Meriwether, Monroe, Pike, Troup, and Upson counties and a State Judge and Seven County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Spalding County (judicial.) The county is in west central Georgia south of Atlanta and northwest of Macon.  The Flint River flows through the western part of the county.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Henry, Butts, Lamar, Pike, Meriwether, Coweta, Fayette, and Clayton counties. 

The area of the county is 198 square miles.  It is 139 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 37 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 339.9 persons per square mile making it 25 out of 159 in the state.  Spalding County has 35.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 75 catches the northeast tip of the county going from Henry County to Butts County.  United States Highways 19/41 go north to south through the county from Henry County to Pike County.  The county is shaped like a fish swimming east.  Griffin is located in the southern third of the county.  Griffin is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 34.9% of the county population.  This county is in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta MSA.
