A new Modern style courthouse was built in 2010 to replace the 1950 structure.  United States Highway 41 is 7th Street in front of the courthouse.  It is on 7th Street at 6th Avenue.  Piper O’Brien Herr Architects provided the red brick designs.  It features columns.  An earlier courthouse was built in 1907 after the August 17, 1905 establishment of the county as the 136th county.  Cordele has been the only county seat.  The county was carved from Dooly County.  The county was named for Congressman Charles Frederick Crisp.  Cordele was named for a railroad president’s daughter.  The county center is 2.4 miles Southeast of Cordele. 

Crisp County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Fifteen Superior Court Judges serve Crisp, Bleckley, Baldwin, Ben Hill, Candler, Dodge, Dooly, Emanuel, Greene, Hancock, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones, Laurens, Montgomery, Morgan, Pulaski, Putnam, Telfair, Toombs, Treutlen, Twiggs, Washington, Wheeler, Wilcox, and Wilkinson counties and Five County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Crisp County (judicial.) Crisp County is in southeast Georgia to the southwest of Macon, Georgia, northeast of Albany, Georgia, and northwest of Valdosta, Georgia.  The Flint River forms its western border.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Dooly, Wilcox, Turner, Worth, Lee, and Sumter counties. 

The area of the county is 274 square miles.  It is 112 of 159 in size in the state.  It ranks 87 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 73.5 persons per square mile making it 75 out of 159 in the state.  Crisp County has 53.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 75 crosses north to south from Dooly County to Turner County.  United States Highway 41 parallels Interstate Highway 75 from Dooly County to Turner County.  United States Highway 280 goes east to west from Wilcox County to Sumter County.  The county’s shape would be rectangular except for the wandering western border.  Cordele is located in the northern third of the county.  Cordele is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 50.8% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced KOER-DEL.  This county is in the Cordele Micropolitan Statistical Area.
