A new red brick and concrete courthouse was built in 2005 to replace earlier courthouses from 1904 and 1939.  Judson S. Bryant is the architect for this Modern style courthouse.  It is located at Ridley and Broad streets.  United States Highway 29 is one block south of the location.  The 1939 masonry courthouse sits next door.  It was designed by William J. J. Chase.  On June 9, 1826 Creek Lands were ceded to the state to create Troup County as the 68th county.  La Grange has always been the county seat.  Governor George Troup provided the inspiration for the county’s name.  La Grange was the name of the estate of the Marquis de Lafayette, Revolutionary War hero.  The county center is in La Grange 3.4 miles North of the city center. 

Troup County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Eighteen Superior Court Judges serve Troup, Butts, Carroll, Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Heard, Henry, Lamar, Meriwether, Monroe, Pike, Spalding, and Upson counties and a State Judge and Four County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Troup County (judicial.) The county is in western Georgia on the border with Alabama.  Columbus, Georgia is south and Atlanta, Georgia is northeast of the county.  The Chattahoochee River flows through the middle of the county.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Coweta, Meriwether, and Harris counties and Alabama and Heard County. 

The area of the county is 414 square miles.  It is 53 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 34 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 167.7 persons per square mile making it 38 out of 159 in the state.  Troup County has 53.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 85 crosses northeast to southwest through the county from Meriwether County to Alabama.  United States Highway 27 goes north to south from Heard County to Harris County.  United States Highway 29 parallels Interstate Highway 85 from Coweta County to Alabama.  The county looks rectangular with the northwest corner missing.  La Grange is located near the center of the county.  La Grange is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 44.5% of the county population.  This county is in the La Grange Micropolitan Statistical Area.
