One of the classic courthouses, the red brick structure was built in 1984 using the designs of the 1905 courthouse.  It is on a town square on Main Street, Courthouse Alley, Isabella Street, and Kelley Street.  Georgia State Highway 33 is Main Street.  A Modern Neo-Classical Revival design was provided by Dennis & Dennis.  It features a dome with a working clock and columns.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  The county center is in Sylvester 2.7 miles North-Northwest of the city center.  The county was created on December 20, 1853 from Dooly and Irwin counties as the 105^th county.  San Bernard (1853), Isabella (1854), and Sylvester (1904) has all been the county seat.  General William Worth provided his name for the county.  Sylvester is named for a settler family. 

Worth County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Sixteen Superior Court Judges serve Worth, Atkinson, Baker, Berrien, Brooks, Calhoun, Clay, Clinch, Colquitt, Cook, Decatur, Dougherty, Early, Echols, Grady, Irwin, Lanier, Lowndes, Miller, Mitchell, Quitman, Randolph, Seminole, Terrell, Thomas, Tift, and Turner counties and a State Judge and Four County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Worth County (judicial.) Worth County is in the southwest part of the state immediately east of Albany, Georgia and north of Valdosta, Georgia.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Crisp, Tift, Turner, Colquitt, Mitchell, Lee, and Dougherty counties. 

The area of the county is 570 square miles.  It is 14 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 85 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 36.5 persons per square mile making it 113 out of 159 in the state.  Worth County has 35.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 82 travels east to west through the county from Tift County to Dougherty County.  The county is shaped like a fat capital letter L.  Sylvester is located slightly south of center in the county.  Sylvester is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 27.1% of the county population.  This county is in the Albany Metropolitan Statistical Area.
