The Modern style red brick structure was built in 1995 on the river at Tribune Street and 4th Avenue.  United States Highway 27 is four blocks north of the site.  James W. Buckley and Associates are the architects.  It is under renovation in 2021.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  There were 1892 and 1976 versions of the courthouse.  The 1976 courthouse now is the County Administration building.  The county was established on December 3, 1832 from Cherokee County as the 82nd county.  Livingston was the first county seat until Rome took over in 1834.  The county was named for General John Floyd, United States Congressman.  The county seat is named for Rome, Italy.  The county center is in Rome 5.3 miles Northwest of the city center. 

Floyd County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Thirty-two Superior Court Judges serve Floyd, Bartow, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cobb, Dade, Douglas, Gordon, Haralson, Murray, Paulding, Polk, Walker, and Whitfield counties and Six County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Floyd County (judicial.) The county is in the northwest part of the state on the border with Alabama.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Walker, Gordon, Bartow, and Polk counties and Alabama and Chattooga County.  

The area of the county is 513 square miles.  It is 20 out of 159 in the state.  It ranks 26 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 192.2 persons per square mile making it 35 out of 159 in the state.  Floyd County has 39.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 27 travels north to south in the county from Chattooga County to Polk County.  United States Highway 411 goes east to west from Bartow County to Alabama.  The county is shaped like a pointed hat with Rome located slightly south of center in the county.  Rome is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 38.3% of the county population.  This county is in the Rome Metropolitan Statistical Area.
