The modest red brick courthouse was built in 1918, enlarged in 1942 and remodeled in 1973.  This Neo-Classical building was designed by J. W. McMillian and Son.  The county was organized on December 19, 1857 from Warren County as the 120th county with the first courthouse built shortly after in 1858.  Gibson has been the only county seat.  The courthouse is on Main Street between Palmer and Walker streets.  Georgia State Highway 102 is Main Street in the small community.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  United States Congressman Thomas Glascock is the namesake for the county.  Judge William Gibson is the source for the county seat’s name.  The county center is in Gibson .4 miles Southeast of the city center. 

Glascock County government consists of a manager, a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Twenty-four Superior Court Judges serve Glascock, Banks, Barrow, Burke, Clarke, Columbia, Elbert, Franklin, Hart, Jackson, Lincoln, Madison, McDuffie, Newton, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Richmond, Taliaferro, Walton, Warren, and Wilkes counties and Two County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Glascock County (judicial.) The county is in eastern Georgia to the southwest of Augusta, Georgia and northeast of Macon, Georgia.  The Ogeechee River forms the western border of the county.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Warren, Jefferson, Hancock, and Washington counties. 

The area of the county is 144 square miles.  It is 156 out of 159 in the state.  It ranks 154 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 20.0 persons per square mile making it 144 out of 159 in the state.  Glascock County has 27.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  The county is shaped like a bag of popcorn spilling to the southwest.  Gibson is located slightly west of center in the county.  Gibson is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 21.8% of the county population.  The county is pronounced GLASS-COK.
