A stately Neo-Classical Revival 1907 red brick courthouse serves Putnam County.  It is on a square at Jefferson Avenue, Sumter Street, Madison Avenue, and Marion Street.  United States Highway 129/441 is Jefferson Avenue in the town.  James Wingfield Golucke is the architect.  The structure was enlarged in 2005.  It features a dome and columns.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  Putnam County was organized on December 10, 1807 from Baldwin County as the 34th county with Eatonton as the county seat.  Revolutionary War General Israel Putnam inspired the county’s name.  General William Eaton is the source name for the county seat.  The county center is in Eatonton 1.5 miles South-Southeast of the city center. 

Putnam County government consists of a manager, a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Fifteen Superior Court Judges serve Putnam, Baldwin, Ben Hill, Bleckley, Candler, Crisp, Dodge, Dooly, Emanuel, Greene, Hancock, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones, Laurens, Montgomery, Morgan, Pulaski, Telfair, Toombs, Treutlen, Twiggs, Washington, Wheeler, Wilcox, and Wilkinson counties and a State Judge and Four County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Putnam County (judicial.) Putnam County is located in central Georgia northeast of Macon, Georgia and southwest of Athens, Georgia.  The Oconee River forms its eastern border.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Morgan, Greene, Hancock, Baldwin, Jones, and Jasper counties. 

The area of the county is 344 square miles.  It is 79 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 82 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 64.1 persons per square mile making it 82 out of 159 in the state.  Putnam County has 28.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 129 crosses the county from north to south from Morgan County to Jones County.  United States Highway 441 is jointed with United States Highway 129 in from Morgan County but splits away to travels southeast into Baldwin County.  The county shape could be described as a bowl of ice cream tipped on its side.  Eatonton is located slightly west of center in the county.  Eatonton is the county seat and the largest city as it is the only incorporated city.  It is 28.6% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced EE-TON-TON.
