The Modern style 1988 courthouse is built of concrete and steel.  The earlier courthouse was built in 1885.  The county was established on December 15, 1818 from parts of Cherokee and Creek lands as the 42nd county.  Hog Mountain was the first county seat replaced by Lawrenceville in 1820.  The current courthouse is on Gjac Alley between Langley Drive and Constitution Boulevard.  United States Highway 29 is one block northwest of the site.  Henningson, Durham, and Richardson are the architects.  Button Gwinnett, a Georgia signer of the Declaration of Independence, provided his name for the county.  Naval Captain James Lawrence is the source name for the county seat.  The county center is in Lawrenceville 5 miles West of the city center. 

Gwinnett County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Twenty-eight Superior Court Judges serve Gwinnett, Cherokee, Dawson, Fannin, Forsyth, Gilmer, Habersham, Hall, Lumpkin, Pickens, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, and White counties and Four State Judges and Twenty-four County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Gwinnett County (judicial.) Gwinnett is northeast of Atlanta, Georgia in northern Georgia.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Forsyth, Hall, Jackson, Barrow, Walton, De Kalb, Rockdale, and Fulton counties. 

The area of the county is 433 square miles.  It is 48 out of 159 in the state.  It ranks 2 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 2210.2 persons per square mile making it 3 out of 159 in the state.  Gwinnett County has 24.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 85 goes northeast to southwest in the county from Barrow County to De Kalb County.  United States Highway 23 enters from the northeast, Forsyth County, and exits to the west, De Kalb County.  United States Highway 29 goes east to west from Barrow County to De Kalb County.  United States Highway 78 crosses the county east to west from Walton County to De Kalb County.  The county shape could be described as a squatting dog facing west.  Lawrenceville is located slightly east of center in the county.  Lawrenceville is the county seat and Peachtree Corners is the largest city.  Lawrenceville is 3.2% and Peachtree Corners is 4.4% of the county population.  The county is pronounced GWI-NET.  This county is in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta Metropolitan Statistical Area.
