The Vernacular and Neo-Classical courthouse white brick building was constructed in 1858 and remodeled in 1928 and 1965.  It is sited on a square at Broad, 6th, McDuffie, and 4th streets.  Georgia State Highway 26 is 6th Street in town.  E. A. Smith provided the designs.  The structure features columns and veterans memorials and a Liberty Bell are on the grounds.  Horry and Tazewell were the county seats before Buena Vista effective 1849.  The county was founded on December 14, 1827 from parts of Lee and Muscogee counties as the 72nd county.  The county is named for Revolutionary War General Francis Marion.  A Mexican War battle site provided the inspiration for the county seat’s name.  The county center is 4.2 miles North of Buena Vista. 

Marion County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Sixteen Superior Court Judges serve Marion, Bibb, Chattahoochee, Crawford, Harris, Houston, Lee, Macon, Muscogee, Peach, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, and Webster counties and Five County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Marion County (judicial.) The county is in western Georgia just east of Columbus, Georgia.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Talbot, Taylor, Schley, Sumter, Webster, and Chattahoochee counties. 

The area of the county is 367 square miles.  It is 70 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 142 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 20.5 persons per square mile making it 142 out of 159 in the state.  Marion County has 21.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  The county is a tall rectangle with its southwest corner cut out.  Buena Vista is located south of the county center.  Buena Vista is the county seat and the only incorporated city thus it is the largest city.  It is 21.1% of the county population.  This county is in the Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area.
