The Modern Government Complex houses most county functions.  It is on Stonewall and Heritage Parkway.  Georgia State Highway 54 is Stonewall.  The structure is concrete and looks like most business facilities.  The Modern style Justice Center building was built in 2003.  It replaced 1825 and 1985 courthouses.  It is located off Jimmie Mayfield Boulevard at Center Drive.  Georgia State Highway 85 is two blocks west of the location.  Ingram Parris Group and Summerous Associates are the architects.  The county was created on May 15, 1821 from Creek lands as the 49th county.  Fayetteville has always been the county seat.  It is named for the Marquis de Lafayette, a Revolutionary War hero.  The county seat is also named for him as is the county seat of Walker County.  Fayette County was the birthplace of 1 Georgia Governor, Hugh M. Dorsey.  The county center is 4.4 miles Southwest of Fayetteville. 

Fayette County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Eighteen Superior Court Judges serve Fayette, Butts, Carroll, Clayton, Coweta, Heard, Henry, Lamar, Meriwether, Monroe, Pike, Spalding, Troup, and Upson counties and a State Judge and Seven County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Fayette County (judicial.) Fayette County is in the southern part of the Atlanta Metropolitan area just south of the City of Atlanta, Georgia.  The Flint River flows through the eastern part of the county.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Fulton, Clayton, Spalding, and Coweta counties. 

The area of the county is 197 square miles.  It is 140 out of 159 in the state.  It ranks 20 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 605.0 persons per square mile making it 16 out of 159 in the state.  Fayette County has 55.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  The county is shaped like an ice cream cone with the ice cream leaning toward the west.  Fayetteville is located in the northeast quarter of the county.  Peachtree City is located on the western border of the county.  Fayetteville is the county seat and Peachtree City is the largest city.  Fayetteville is 15.9% of the county population while Peachtree City is 32.1% of the county population.  This county is in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta Metropolitan Statistical Area.
