A textbook Neo-Classical Revival courthouse was constructed in 1908. It is at Greene and Founderburg streets (Georgia State Highway 11). T. F. Lockwood, Sr., was the designer of this tan brick structure. The building was enlarged in 1990 and restored in 2003. It features a dome with a working clock and columns. Veteran memorials are across the street. There was an 1838 courthouse also in Monticello, the only county seat. The county was created on December 10, 1807 from Baldwin County as the 30th county. Revolutionary War hero William Jasper is the source for the county’s name. He is also the source for the Pickens County seat. Monticello is named for President Thomas Jefferson’s home. The county center is 2.9 miles Northwest of Monticello.
Jasper County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive). It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.) Fifteen Superior Court Judges serve Jasper, Bleckley, Baldwin, Ben Hill, Candler, Crisp, Dodge, Dooly, Emanuel, Greene, Hancock, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones, Laurens, Montgomery, Morgan, Pulaski, Putnam, Telfair, Toombs, Treutlen, Twiggs, Washington, Wheeler, Wilcox, and Wilkinson counties and Three County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Jasper County (judicial.) Jasper County is in central Georgia north of Macon, Georgia and southeast of Atlanta, Georgia. The Ocmulgee River is its western border. The county is surrounded clockwise by Morgan, Putnam, Jones, Monroe, Butts, and Newton counties.
The area of the county is 370 square miles. It is 68 out of 159 counties in the state. It ranks 109 out of 159 in population in the state. It has a density of 39.5 persons per square mile making it 107 out of 159 in the state. Jasper County has 19.2% of its population in its incorporated areas. There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county. The county’s shape can be described as a torch. Monticello is located near the center of the county. Monticello is the county seat and the largest city. It is 17.4% of the county population. This county is in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta Metropolitan Statistical Area.
