The traditional High Victorian style courthouse was constructed in 1893 and renovated in 2009.  It is on Lee, Jefferson, 5th, and Stonewall streets.  Georgia State Highway 32 is Lee Street.  William H. Parkins provided the red brick and stone designs.  The county transformed an armory into an annex recently.  The courthouse features a tower and turrets.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  Terrell County was created on February 16, 1856 from parts of Randolph and Lee counties as the 113th county.  Dawson has been the only county seat.  Congressman William Terrell is the namesake of the county.  Senator William Crosby Dawson provided his name to the county seat.  He is also the namesake of Dawson County and its county seat.  The county center is in Dawson 1.5 miles Northeast of the city center. 

The area of the county is 336 square miles.  It is 85 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 130 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 27.3 persons per square mile making it 129 out of 159 in the state.  Terrell County has 56.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 82 enters the county from the southeast, Dougherty County, and exits to the west, Randolph County.  The county is shaped like a small letter t.  Dawson is slightly west of center in the county.  Dawson is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 48.2% of the county population. 

Terrell County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Sixteen Superior Court Judges serve Terrell, Atkinson, Baker, Berrien, Brooks, Calhoun, Clay, Clinch, Colquitt, Cook, Decatur, Dougherty, Early, Echols, Grady, Irwin, Lanier, Lowndes, Miller, Mitchell, Quitman, Randolph, Seminole, Thomas, Tift, Turner, and Worth counties and Four County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Terrell County (judicial.) Terrell County is in southwest Georgia directly northwest of Albany, Georgia and southeast of Columbus, Georgia.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Sumter, Lee, Dougherty, Calhoun, Randolph, and Webster counties.  This county is in the Albany Metropolitan Statistical Area.
