The traditional southern Neo-Classical Revival red brick courthouse was built in 1920.  It is located on a square on 2nd Street at Martin Luther King Avenue.  Second Street is United States Highway 221 in this city.  James J. Baldwin is the architect.  The building was renovated in 1976.  It features a tower and columns.  Treutlen County was created on November 5, 1918 from Emanuel and Montgomery counties as the 153rd county with Soperton as the only county seat.  The county is named for Governor John A. Treutlen.  The county seat is named for railroad official Benjamin Franklin Soper.  The county center is in Soperton .8 miles Northeast of the city center. 

Treutlen County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Fifteen Superior Court Judges serve Treutlen, Baldwin, Ben Hill, Bleckley, Candler, Crisp, Dodge, Dooly, Emanuel, Greene, Hancock, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones, Laurens, Montgomery, Morgan, Pulaski, Putnam, Telfair, Toombs, Twiggs, Washington, Wheeler, Wilcox, and Wilkinson counties and a State Judge and Three County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Treutlen County (judicial.) Treutlen County is in southeast Georgia between Savannah, Georgia and Macon, Georgia.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Emanuel, Montgomery, Wheeler, and Laurens counties. 

The area of the county is 201 square miles.  It is 137 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 146 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 31.9 persons per square mile making it 120 out of 159 in the state.  Treutlen County has 45.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 16 crosses the county east to west from Emanuel County to Laurens County.  United States Highway 221 comes in from the northeast, Emanuel County, and goes out to the southwest, Montgomery County.  The county is overall triangular shaped.  Soperton is in the southwest quarter of the county.  Soperton is the county seat and the largest and only city in the county.  It is 45.0% of the county population.  The county is pronounced TRUET-LEN.  The county seat is pronounced SOE-PER-TON.
