A Queen Anne style red brick courthouse serves Talbot County.  It was built in 1893 on a square surrounded by Washington, Madison, Jefferson, and Monroe streets.  United States Highway 80 is Washington Street in the town.  Alexander C. Bruce & Thomas H. Morgan were the building designers.  The facility features a tower with a working clock and veteran memorials and a gazebo are on the grounds.  Muscogee County provided the land for Talbot County on December 14, 1827 as the 74th county.  Talbotton has been the only county seat.  Later Taylor County was cut from Talbot County.  Governor Matthew Talbot is the source name for both the county and county seat.  The county center is 1.6 miles Northeast of Talbotton. 

Talbot County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Sixteen Superior Court Judges serve Talbot, Bibb, Chattahoochee, Crawford, Harris, Houston, Lee, Macon, Marion, Muscogee, Peach, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Taylor, and Webster counties and Four County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Talbot County (judicial.) The county is in the western part of the state.  Columbus, Georgia is west and Macon, Georgia is east of the county.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Upson, Taylor, Marion, Chattahoochee, Muscogee, Harris, and Meriwether counties. 

The area of the county is 393 square miles.  It is 61 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 148 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 14.6 persons per square mile making it 153 out of 159 in the state.  Talbot County has 23.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  The county is pronounced TAL-BUT.  United States Highway 27 Alternate comes from Meriwether County, northwest, and goes into Harris County, west.  United States Highway 80 crosses the southern part of the county from east to west from Taylor County to Muscogee County.  The county looks like a drill facing east.  Talbotton is slightly south and west of center in the county.  Talbotton is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 12.9% of the county population.
