The Neo-Classical Revival red brick and columned courthouse was built in 1916 on Humphreys Street at Perry Man Street.  United States Highway 378 is three blocks west of the site.  G. Lloyd Preacher is the building designer.  The courthouse was renovated in 1995.  The structure features a tower and veteran memorials are on the grounds.  A 1983 Annex sits behind the courthouse.  The county was created on February 20, 1796 from Wilkes County as the 24th county with Lincolnton as the only county seat.  The county and county seat are named for Revolutionary War General Benjamin Lincoln.  The county center is 3.1 miles East of Lincolnton. 

Lincoln County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Twenty-four Superior Court Judges serve Lincoln, Banks, Barrow, Burke, Clarke, Columbia, Elbert, Franklin, Glascock, Hart, Jackson, Madison, McDuffie, Newton, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Richmond, Taliaferro, Walton, Warren, and Wilkes counties and Four County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Lincoln County (judicial.) The county is in far eastern Georgia on the border with South Carolina.  The Savannah River forms its eastern border.  Augusta, Georgia is located southeast of the county.  The county is surrounded clockwise by South Carolina and Columbia, McDuffie, Wilkes, and Elbert counties. 

The area of the county is 211 square miles.  It is 135 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 141 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 36.4 persons per square mile making it 114 out of 159 in the state.  Lincoln County has 19.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 378 enters from the east, South Carolina, and exits to the west, Wilkes County.  The county is a triangle with Lincolnton located southwest of center in the county.  Lincolnton is the county seat and the only incorporated city thus the largest city.  It is 19.3% of the county population.
