The dark red brick Neo-Classical and Beaux Arts style structure in Donalsonville was built in 1923.  It is in a city square at Court Street and Knox Street.  United States Highway 84 is one block south of the site.  William J. J. Chase is the building architect.  The courthouse was renovated in 1978.  It features faux columns and a working clock.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  Seminole County was founded on November 2, 1920 from parts of Decatur and Early counties as the 158th county.  Donalsonville has always been the county seat.  The county is named for the Native American tribe.  The county seat gets its name from settler Jonathan Donalson.  The county center is 8.7 miles South of Donalsonville. 

Seminole County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Sixteen Superior Court Judges serve Seminole, Atkinson, Baker, Berrien, Brooks, Calhoun, Clay, Clinch, Colquitt, Cook, Decatur, Dougherty, Early, Echols, Grady, Irwin, Lanier, Lowndes, Miller, Mitchell, Quitman, Randolph, Terrell, Thomas, Tift, Turner, and Worth counties and Three County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Seminole County (judicial.) The county is in the southwest corner of the state.  Albany, Georgia is northeast of the county and Tallahassee, Florida is southeast of the county.  The Chattahoochee River forms its western border.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Miller and Decatur counties, and Florida and Alabama, and Early County. 

The area of the county is 238 square miles.  It is 125 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 131 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 38.5 persons per square mile making it 110 out of 159 in the state.  Seminole County has 34.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 84 enters the county from the east, Decatur County, and exits into Early County to the northwest.  The county is shaped like a funnel.  Donalsonville is in the extreme northern part of the county near the border.  Donalsonville is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 31.0% of the county population.
