The stately Neo-Classical Revival courthouse in Abbeville was built in 1903 and sits at Main and Broad streets in the middle of this town.  United States Highway 129 is Broad Street.  Frank Pierce Milburn is the designer of this tan brick and masonry building.  The building was renovated in 1981 and 2014.  It features a tower and columns and veteran memorials on the grounds.  The county center is 10.2 miles West of Abbeville nearer Rochelle.  Wilcox County was created on December 22, 1857 from Irwin, Pulaski, and Dooly counties as the 124th county.  Abbeville has always been the county seat.  Georgia Legislator Mark Wilcox inspired the name for the county.  One tradition says Abbeville is named for the wife of a settler while another tradition says it’s named for Abbeville, South Carolina. 

Wilcox County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Fifteen Superior Court Judges serve Wilcox, Atkinson, Baker, Berrien, Brooks, Calhoun, Clay, Clinch, Colquitt, Cook, Decatur, Dougherty, Early, Echols, Grady, Irwin, Lanier, Lowndes, Miller, Mitchell, Quitman, Randolph, Seminole, Terrell, Tift, Turner, and Worth counties and Three County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Wilcox County (judicial.) The county is located in south central Georgia south of Macon, Georgia and northeast of Albany, Georgia.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Pulaski, Dodge, Telfair, Ben Hill, Turner, Crisp, and Dooly counties. 

The area of the county is 380 square miles.  It is 64 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 134 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 23.1 persons per square mile making it 136 out of 159 in the state.  Wilcox County has 52.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 129 crosses the county north to south from Pulaski County to Ben Hill County.  United States Highway 280 travels east to west from Dodge County to Crisp County.  The county is shaped like a plow.  Abbeville is on the eastern border of the county.  Abbeville is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 30.6% of the county population.
