The red brick Neo-Classical Revival courthouse was built in 1917.  It sits on Pearl Avenue at McRae Street.  Georgia State Highway 126 is one block north of the site.  The building was renovated in 1961.  Edward Columbus Hosford is the building designer.  It features columns.  The county was established on November 15, 1912 from Montgomery County as the 146th county with Alamo as the only county seat.  Confederate General Joseph Wheeler provided the inspiration for the county’s name.  The county seat is named for the Texas landmark.  The county center is 10.4 miles Southeast of Alamo.  The Oconee River is its eastern border. 

Wheeler County government consists of a manager, a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Fifteen Superior Court Judges serve Wheeler, Baldwin, Ben Hill, Bleckley, Candler, Crisp, Dodge, Dooly, Emanuel, Greene, Hancock, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones, Laurens, Montgomery, Morgan, Pulaski, Putnam, Telfair, Toombs, Treutlen, Twiggs, Washington, Wilcox, and Wilkinson counties and Three County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Wheeler County (judicial.) Wheeler County is located in southeast Georgia to the southeast of Macon, Georgia and west of Savannah, Georgia.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Treutlen, Montgomery, Jeff Davis, Telfair, Dodge, and Laurens counties. 

The area of the county is 298 square miles.  It is 98 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 143 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 25.1 persons per square mile making it 133 out of 159 in the state.  Wheeler County has 53.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 280 enters the county from the east, Montgomery County, and exits to the west, Telfair County.  United States Highways 319/441 cross the northwest corner of the county, north to south, Laurens County to Telfair County.  The county is shaped like a funnel pointing southeast.  Alamo is in the northwest quarter of the county.  Alamo is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 42.1% of the county population.
