The Modern style red brick courthouse built in 1974 replaced a similar 1939 building.  The building is at Center and Main streets.  United States Highway 278 is six blocks south of the courthouse.  John H. Cunningham & Associates are the building designers.  The structure features columns.  Rockdale County was created on October 18, 1870 from Newton, Henry, Walton, Gwinnett, and De Kalb counties as the 133rd county.  Conyers has always been the county seat.  The county is named for the granite levels lying under the county.  Settler John Conyers, who provided the land for the railroad depot, is the namesake for the county seat.  The county center is 1 mile South of Conyers. 

Rockdale County government consists of a manager, a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Sixteen Superior Court Judges serve Rockdale and DeKalb counties and a State Judge and Five County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Rockdale County (judicial.) Rockdale County is in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area southeast of Atlanta, Georgia.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Gwinnett, Newton, Walton, Henry, and De Kalb counties. 

The area of the county is 131 square miles.  It is 158 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 28 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 714.2 persons per square mile making it 11 out of 159 in the state.  Rockdale County has 18.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 20 crosses east to west through the county, Newton County to De Kalb County.  United States Highway 278 is combined with Interstate Highway 20 from Newton County to De Kalb County.  The county’s shape resembles a cowboy boot.  Conyers is located at the county’s center.  Conyers is the county seat and the only incorporated city thus it is the largest city.  It is 18.5% of the county population.  This county is in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta Metropolitan Statistical Area.
