A traditional tan brick Neo-Classical Revival courthouse was built in 1910. It is located on Commerce at Washington Street. United States Highway 27 is Commerce through town. Bryan Architectural Firm are the architects. The courthouse features a dome with veteran memorials on the grounds. Chattooga County was established on December 28, 1838 from parts of Walker and Floyd counties as the 92nd county. Summerville has always been the county seat. The county’s name comes from the Chattooga River which is Native American for “he drank by sips.” The county seat’s name as a result of being a popular summer resort location. The county center is 3.5 miles Southeast of Summerville.
Chattooga County government consists of a manager, a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive). It has 1 Commissioner (legislative.) Thirty-two Superior Court Judges serve Chattooga, Bartow, Catoosa, Cobb, Dade, Douglas, Floyd, Gordon, Haralson, Murray, Paulding, Polk, Walker, and Whitfield counties and a State Judge and Five County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Chattooga County (judicial.) The county is in the northwest part of Georgia on the border with Alabama. The Chattooga River flows through the middle of the county. The county is surrounded clockwise by Walker and Floyd counties and Alabama.
The area of the county is 314 square miles. It is 94 of 159 in size in the state. It ranks 76 out of 159 in population in the state. It has a density of 79.5 persons per square mile making it 68 out of 159 in the state. Chattooga County has 29.3% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 27 crosses north to south through the county from Walker County to Floyd County. The county is basically triangular. Summerville is located slightly west of center in the county. Summerville is the county seat and the largest city. It is 17.7% of the county population. This county is in the Summerville Micropolitan Statistical Area.
