The Modern style brown brick and concrete courthouse was built in 1992 to replace the classic 1903 facility.  It sits on Cherokee Avenue at Bartow Street.  Georgia Highway 113 is one block south of the site.  Brackett Associates are the building designers.  The old courthouse has the veteran memorials and a tower with a working clock.  The county was created on December 3, 1832 from the Cherokee Lands as the 80th county.  Cassville was the original county seat.  Cartersville became the county seat in 1867.  The county was named for General Francis S. Bartow.  Cartersville was named for landowner Farish Carter.  Bartow County was the birthplace of 1 Georgia Governor, Joe F. Harris.  The county center is 8.7 miles North of Cartersville nearer White. 

Bartow County government consists of a manager, a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 1 Commissioner (legislative.)  Thirty-two Superior Court Judges serve Bartow, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cobb, Dade, Douglas, Floyd, Gordon, Haralson, Murray, Paulding, Polk, Walker, and Whitfield counties and nineteen County Judges serve, court clerk, and county attorney serve Bartow County (judicial.) The county is in northwest Georgia between Atlanta, Georgia, southeast, and Chattanooga, Tennessee, northwest.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Gordon, Pickens, Cherokee, Cobb, Paulding, Polk, and Floyd counties. 

The area of the county is 460 square miles.  The county is 35 of 159 in the state.  It ranks 24 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 236.7 persons per square mile making it 30 out of 159 in the state.  Bartow County has 32.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 75 goes north to south through the county from Gordon County to Cobb County.  United States Highway 41 parallels Interstate Highway 75 from Gordon County to Cobb County.  United States Highway 411 enters from Gordon County, north, but exits into Floyd County, west.  The county is an overall rectangular shaped county.  Cartersville is in the southern third of the county.  Cartersville is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 21.3% of the county population.  This county is in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta Metropolitan Statistical Area.
