The Modern style masonry courthouse was built in 2001 and renovated in 2009. Precision Planning, Inc., provided the designs. It is located on Agency Street at Hortman Mill Road. Georgia State Highway 42 is Agency Street in this small community. The facility features a tower and columns. There was an 1851 version of the courthouse since the county’s December 9, 1822 formation as the 55th county. Knoxville has been the only county seat. The county was created from Houston County and later provided land for Upson County. Senator William Harris Crawford is the source for the county’s name. He is also the source of Taliaferro County’s seat. Knoxville is reported to be named for General Henry Knox. The county center is 1.3 miles Southeast of Knoxville.
Crawford County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive). It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.) Sixteen Superior Court Judges serve Crawford, Bibb, Chattahoochee, Harris, Houston, Lee, Macon, Marion, Muscogee, Peach, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, and Webster counties and Five County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Crawford County (judicial.) The county is in western Georgia between Columbus, Georgia and Macon, Georgia. The Flint River is the county’s western border. The county is surrounded clockwise by Monroe, Bibb, Peach, Taylor, Macon, and Upson counties.
The area of the county is 325 square miles. It is 90 of 159 in size in the state. It ranks 115 out of 159 in population in the state. It has a density of 37.3 persons per square mile making it 112 out of 159 in the state. Crawford County has 6.7% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 80 crosses east to west, Bibb County to Upson County. United States Highway 341 goes north to south in the county from Monroe County to Peach County. The county resembles a bird’s head. Knoxville is slightly west of center in the county. Roberta is located slightly west of center in the county. Knoxville is the county seat although it is unincorporated. Roberts is the largest and only incorporated city in the county. Knoxville is 0.5% of the county population while Roberta is 6.7% of the county population. This county is in the Macon Metropolitan Statistical Area.
