The 1872 courthouse remodeled in 1931 sits on North at Market.  United States Highway 17 is North Way.  The facility is a concrete and stucco structure and was enlarged in 1980.  The Federalist style building’s architect is unknown.  A fountain is on the grounds.  McIntosh County was created from Liberty County on December 19, 1793 as the 17th county with Darien as the county seat.  The county is name for the McIntosh family a group of settlers in this area.  The county seat’s name comes from a Scottish colony in Panama.  The county center is 9.3 miles North-Northeast of Darien. 

McIntosh County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Twenty-one Superior Court Judges serve McIntosh, Appling, Bacon, Brantley, Bryan, Bulloch, Camden, Charlton, Chatham, Coffee, Effingham, Evans, Glynn, Jeff Davis, Jenkins, Liberty, Long, Pierce, Screven, Tattnall, Ware, and Wayne counties and a State Judge and Four County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve McIntosh County (judicial.) The county is in southeast Georgia on the Atlantic Ocean.  Savannah, Georgia is north and Jacksonville, Florida is south of the county.  The Altamaha River forms the southern border of the county.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Liberty County and the Atlantic Ocean and Glynn, Wayne, and Long counties. 

The area of the county is 434 square miles.  It is 47 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 121 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 25.3 persons per square mile making it 132 out of 159 in the state.  McIntosh County has 13.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 95 crosses the county north to south from Liberty County to Glynn County.  United States Highway 17 parallels Interstate Highway 95 from Liberty County to Glynn County.  The county is shaped like a mitten.  Darien is located in the southwest quarter of the county.  Darien is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city.  It is 13.3% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced DARE-E-EN.  This county is in the Brunswick Metropolitan Statistical Area.
