The 1979 Modern style courthouse sits on Broad Street between Wells and Boyd.  Georgia State Highway 55 is Broad Street.  Biggers, Scarbrough, Neal, Crisp & Clark are the architects of this brown brick structure.  Veterans are honored in front of the courthouse.  There was an earlier courthouse built in 1854 also in Cusseta, the only county seat.  The county was created on February 13, 1854 from Muscogee and Marion counties as the 108th county.  It was named for the river which forms its western border with Alabama.  The county seat’s name comes from the Native American for “trading place.”  The county center is 6 miles Northwest of Cusseta. 

Chattahoochee County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Sixteen Superior Court Judges serve Chattahoochee, Bibb, Crawford, Harris, Houston, Lee, Macon, Marion, Muscogee, Peach, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, and Webster counties and Six County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Chattahoochee County (judicial.) The county is located in western Georgia on the border with Alabama.  Columbus, Georgia is immediately north of the county.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Talbot, Marion, and Stewart counties and Alabama and Muscogee County. 

The area of the county is 249 square miles.  It is 120 of 159 in size in the state.  It ranks 127 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 38.4 persons per square mile making it 111 out of 159 in the state.  Chattahoochee County has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 27 enters the county from Muscogee County to the north and exits south into Stewart County.  United States Highway 280 is joined with United States Highway 27 from Muscogee County but splits to go further east into Stewart County.  The county is shaped like a water pitcher.  Cusseta is contiguous with the county; therefore, it is the county seat and largest city.  This county is in the Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area.
