The Modern style tan brick courthouse was built in 1997 with the appearance of an older structure.  It is at Wilkinson and Hancock streets.  Georgia State Highway 49 is Hancock Street.  Brittain, Thompson, Bray and Brown are the architects.  The facility features columns.  Veteran memorials are in front of the old courthouse which is across the street.  The county was established on May 11, 1803 from Creek lands as the 27th county.  Milledgeville has always been the county seat.  Morgan, Jones, Putnam, and Jasper counties were later created from Baldwin County.  Congressman Abraham Baldwin, founder of the University of Georgia, is the source for the county name.  Governor John Milledge provided his name to the county seat.  The county center is in Milledgeville 2.4 miles South of the city center. 

Baldwin County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Fifteen Superior Court Judges serve Baldwin, Ben Hill, Bleckley, Candler, Crisp, Dodge, Dooly, Emanuel, Greene, Hancock, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones, Laurens, Montgomery, Morgan, Pulaski, Putnam, Telfair, Toombs, Treutlen, Twiggs, Washington, Wheeler, Wilcox, and Wilkinson counties and a State Court Judge and seven County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Baldwin County (judicial.) The county is in central Georgia southwest of Augusta and southeast of Atlanta.  The Oconee River flows through the middle of the county.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Hancock, Washington, Wilkinson, Jones, and Putnam counties. 

The area of the county is 258 square miles.  The county is 117 of 159 in the state.  It ranks 47 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 169.8 persons per square mile making it 37 out of 159 in the state.  Baldwin County has 39.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 441 crosses north to south in the county from Putnam County to Wilkinson County.  The county is shaped like a triangle with the northeast point moved to the southeast.  Milledgeville dominates the center of the county.  Milledgeville is the county seat and the largest, and only incorporated city.  It is 39.0% of the county population.  This county is in the Milledgeville Micropolitan Statistical Area.
