White columns on the Neo-Classical Revival red brick courthouse stand out.  It is built in 1915 on Hamilton Street between Washington and Cass streets.  Georgia State Highway 27 is Hamilton Street.  T. F. Lockwood is the building architect.  The structure features columns and a tower.  The county was established on December 16, 1853 from Stewart County as the 103rd county and named Kinchafoonee County.  It was changed in 1856 to honor Massachusetts Senator Daniel Webster.  Preston has always been the county seat.  Senator William C. Preston is the namesake for the county seat.  The county center is 4.2 miles South-Southwest of Preston. 

Webster County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Sixteen Superior Court Judges serve Webster, Bibb, Chattahoochee, Crawford, Harris, Houston, Lee, Macon, Marion, Muscogee, Peach, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, and Taylor counties and Three County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Webster County (judicial.) Webster County is in western Georgia to the southeast of Columbus, Georgia and to the northwest of Albany, Georgia.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Marion, Sumter, Terrell, Randolph, and Stewart counties.  

The area of the county is 210 square miles.  It is 136 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 157 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 11.2 persons per square mile making it 155 out of 159 in the state.  Webster County has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 280 crosses the county east to west from Sumter County to Stewart County.  The county is a rectangle with a triangle added to the northwest.  Preston and the county are now contiguous.  Preston is the county seat and the only incorporated city.
