There is a Modern style red brick 1961 courthouse.  There was an 1889 courthouse also in Calhoun, the only county seat since its founding on February 13, 1850 as the 93rd county.  The county was originally part of Floyd and Bartow counties.  The building is on Wall Street between North and South Court streets.  United States Highway 41 is Wall Street.  Cunningham & Forehand provided the designs.  There is an Annex behind the courthouse.  The courthouse features columns and veteran memorials.  The county center is 6.4 miles East of Calhoun nearer New Town. 

Gordon County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Thirty-two Superior Court Judges serve Gordon, Bartow, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cobb, Dade, Douglas, Floyd, Haralson, Murray, Paulding, Polk, Walker, and Whitfield counties and Five County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Gordon County (judicial.) The county is located in northwest Georgia southeast of Chattanooga, Tennessee and northwest of Atlanta, Georgia.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Murray, Gilmer, Pickens, Cherokee, Bartow, Floyd, Walker, and Whitfield counties.  The Coosa River flows through the county.  The county was named for Railroad President William Washington Gordon.  Vice President John C. Calhoun is the namesake for the county seat.  He is also the source name for Calhoun County. 

The area of the county is 355 square miles.  It is 75 out of 159 in the state.  It ranks 40 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 162.1 persons per square mile making it 40 out of 159 in the state.  Gordon County has 33.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 75 crosses the county north to south from Whitfield County to Bartow County.  United States Highway 41 parallels Interstate Highway 75 from Whitfield County to Bartow County.  United States Highway 411 transition the eastern part of the county north to south Murray County to Bartow County.  Calhoun is in the western quarter of this overall rectangular county.  Calhoun is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 29.5% of the county population.  This county is in the Calhoun Micropolitan Statistical Area.
