The stately red brick 1931 Colonial Revival courthouse sits in this small community.  It is located on Georgia State Highway 37 surrounded by Dickey, School, Court, and Oak streets.  It was renovated in 1972 and enlarged in 1998.  T. F. Lockwood, Jr., is the columned building designer.  Calhoun County was established on February 20, 1854 from parts of Early and Baker counties as the 111th county.  Morgan was the original county seat in 1854, followed by Arlington in 1923, and again back to Morgan in 1929.  Vice President John C. Calhoun is the county’s namesake.  He is also the namesake of Gordon County’s seat.  Congressman Daniel Morgan is the source for the county seat as well as Morgan County.  The county center is 4.9 miles Northwest of Morgan nearer Dickey. 

Calhoun County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Sixteen Superior Court Judges serve Calhoun, Atkinson, Baker, Berrien, Brooks, Clay, Clinch, Colquitt, Cook, Decatur, Dougherty, Early, Echols, Grady, Irwin, Lanier, Lowndes, Miller, Mitchell, Quitman, Randolph, Seminole, Terrell, Thomas, Tift, Turner, and Worth counties and a County Judge, court clerk, and county attorney serve Calhoun County (judicial.) The county is in southwest Georgia south of Columbus, Georgia.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Terrell, Dougherty, Baker, Early, Clay, and Randolph counties. 

The area of the county is 280 square miles.  It is 109 of 159 in size in the state.  It ranks 149 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 19.9 persons per square mile making it 145 out of 159 in the state.  Calhoun County has 78.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  The overall county shape is rectangular.  Morgan is near the center of the county.  Edison is in the northwest part of the county.  Morgan is the county seat and the largest city.  Morgan is 31.3% of the county population.
