A Modern style red brick building is the 2010 courthouse. It replaced 1836 and 1965 versions. The 1965 courthouse is now the Administrative Center. It is on Mechanicsville Road. Georgia Highway 9 is one block west of the site. Gardner, Spencer, Smith, Tench, and Jarbeau are the architects. The county was organized on December 3, 1832 and taken from Cherokee County as the 85th county. Auraria was the first county seat until 1836 when Dahlonega took over. Governor Georgia Wilson Lumpkin is the namesake for the county. He is also the source name for the county seat of Stewart County. Dahlonega is a Native American word for “golden color.” Lumpkin County was the birthplace of 1 Georgia Governor, Allen D. Candler. The county center is in Dahlonega 2.1 miles North of the city center.
Lumpkin County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive). It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.) Twenty-eight Superior Court Judges serve Lumpkin, Cherokee, Dawson, Fannin, Forsyth, Gilmer, Gwinnett, Habersham, Hall, Pickens, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, and White counties and Four County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Lumpkin County (judicial.) The county is in northern Georgia to the northeast of Atlanta, Georgia. The county is surrounded clockwise by Union, White, Hall, Dawson, and Fannin counties.
The area of the county is 284 square miles. It is 105 out of 159 counties in the state. Lumpkin is 55 out of 159 counties in the state in population. It has a density of 117.9 persons per square mile making it 53 out of 159 in the state. Lumpkin County has 22.5% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 19 enters from the north, Union County, and exits to the south, Dawson County. United States Highway 129 enters joined with United States Highway 19 from Union County, splits and goes east into White County. The county is shaped like a bowl of ice cream turned 45 degrees. Dahlonega is in the southern third of the county. It has 22.5% of the county population. The county is pronounced LUMP-KIN. The county seat is pronounced DA-LON-E-GA.
