In 1926 the courthouse was built for Long County in Neo-Classical Revival style. It is located on McDonald Street at Academy Street. Georgia State Highway 57 is McDonald Street. George Maynard Harrington designed the current red brick courthouse. The structure was renovated in 1974 and features columns. An Annex sits next to the courthouse. Long County was established on November 2, 1920 from Liberty County as the 157th county with Ludowici as the only county seat. The county is named for Doctor Crawford Williamson Long. The county seat gets its name from settler William Ludowici. The county center is 7 miles North-Northwest of Ludowici.

The county is in southeast Georgia southwest of Savannah, Georgia. The Altamaha River forms its southern border. The county is surrounded clockwise by Liberty, McIntosh, Wayne, and Tattnall counties.
The area of the county is 403 square miles. It is 58 out of 159 counties in the state. It ranks 112 out of 159 in population in the state. It has a density of 35.98 persons per square mile making it 118 out of 159 in the state. Long County has 11.8% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highways 25/301 enter from the northwest, Tattnall County, and exits to the south, Wayne County. United States Highway 84 comes in from Liberty County to the north and goes out to Wayne County to the south. The county shape is a small letter r tipping backward 45 degrees. Ludowici is located slightly south of center in the county. It is the only incorporated city in the county. Ludowici is the county seat and the largest city. It is 11.8% of the county population. The county seat is pronounced LOO-DA-WI-CEE. This county is in the Hinesville-Fort Stewart Metropolitan Statistical Area.
