The red brick High Victorian style courthouse, located on a square at Monmouth, Broad, Alexander, and Commerce streets, was built in 1901. United States Highway 278 is Broad Street in the town. The courthouse designer was Lewis F. Goodrich. The facility features a tower with a working clock. Veteran memorials are on the grounds. Taliaferro County was formed on December 24, 1825 from Wilkes, Greene, Hancock, Oglethorpe, and Warren counties as the 64th county. Crawfordville has always been the county seat. American Revolutionary War hero Benjamin Taliaferro inspired the county name. The county seat is named for Senator William H. Crawford. He is also the source name for Crawford County. Taliaferro County was the birthplace of 1 Georgia Governor, Alexander H. Stephens. The county center is 1.7 miles Northeast of Crawfordville.

The county is surrounded clockwise by Wilkes, Warren, Hancock, Greene, and Oglethorpe counties.
