The Modern style brown brick building for Clark County sits on Main Street between Clark and Idaho streets. Idaho State Highway 22 is Main Street. The courthouse was built in 1975 using the designs of Sundberg and Associates. There was an earlier courthouse also in Dubois, the only county seat. The county was formed on February 1, 1919 as the 42nd county. It is named for State Senator Sam K. Clark. United States Senator Fred Dubois is the namesake for the county seat.
Clark County government consists of a sheriff, a prosecuter, a coroner, a clerk, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive). It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.) Five Circuit Court Judges and a Magistrate Court Judge serve Clark, Bingham, Bonneville, Butte, Custer, Fremont, Jefferson, Lemhi, Madison, and Teton counties (judicial.) The county is in the southeast part of the state on the border with Montana. Idaho Falls, Idaho is south and Butte, Montana is north of the county. The continental divide follows its northern border with Montana. The county center is 9.2 miles West-Northwest of Dubois. The county is surrounded clockwise by Montana and Fremont, Jefferson, Butte, and Lemhi counties.

It has a density of 0.4 persons per square mile making it 44 out of 44 in the state. Clark County has 68.7% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 15 enters from Montana, north, and exits into Jefferson County, south. The overall shape of the county looks like a water pistol with an extra extension in the southwest corner. Dubois is located in the southern third of the county. Dubois is the county seat and the largest city. It is 65.1% of the county population. The county seat is pronounced DOO-BWA.
