The tan brick Art Deco courthouse was built in 1939 to replace the 1874 courthouse.  It is sited on Court Street at East 70.  Idaho State Highway 38 is two blocks south.  Sundberg & Sundberg provided the courthouse designs.  The veteran memorials are down Court Street in town.  The county was established on January 22, 1864 as the 2nd county and Malad City has been the only county seat.  It originally included Caribou County.  Oneida Lake, New York provided the inspiration for the county’s name.  The county seat is named for the river which was named because trappers became sick after eating the local beaver.  Oneida County was the birthplace of 1 Idaho Governor, John V. Evans, Sr. 

Oneida County government consists of a sheriff, a prosecuter, a coroner, a clerk, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Three Circuit Court Judges and a Magistrate Court Judge serve Oneida, Bannock, Bear Lake, Caribou, Franklin, and Power counties (judicial.) The county is in southeast Idaho on the border with Utah.  Pocatello, Idaho is north and Salt Lake City, Utah is south of the county.  The county center is 20.7 miles West of Malad City nearer Holbrook.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Bannock and Franklin counties and Utah and Cassia and Power counties. 

The area of the county is 1200 square miles.  It is 26 out of 44 in the state.  It ranks 38 out of 44 in population in the state.  It has a density of 3.8 persons per square mile making it 34 out of 44 in the state.  Oneida County has 50.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 15 crosses the county north to south from Bannock County to Utah.  Interstate Highway 84 cuts the southwest corner of the county from Cassia County, west, to Utah, south.  The county shape is mostly rectangular with a jagged northeast exception.  Malad City is in the eastern quarter of the county.  Malad City is the county seat and the only incorporated city and thus it is the largest city.  It is 50.3% of the county population.  The county is pronounced OE-NIE-DA.  The county seat is pronounced MAL-AD SI-TEE.
