The red brick courthouse was built in 1875 on the square at Main, 3rd, Chestnut, and 4th streets.  Ohio State Highway 541 is Chestnut Street.  Carpenter & Williams provided the Second Empire and Italianate designs.  The courthouse was renovated in 1951.  The structure features a tower with working clock.  The grounds have veteran memorials and a gazebo.  An 1824 version preceded the current one also in Coshocton, the only county seat.  The county was established on March 31, 1810 from parts of Muskingum and Tuscarawas counties as the 42nd county.  The county and county seat names are Native American for “union of waters.” 

Coshocton County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Two Common Pleas Court Judges serve Coshocton County.  The county is in eastern Ohio.  Cleveland, Ohio is north and Columbus, Ohio is southwest of the county.  The county center is 5.6 miles West of Coshocton.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Holmes, Tuscarawas, Guernsey, Muskingum, Licking, and Knox counties. 

The area of the county is 564.1 square miles.  It is 13 out of 88 in the state.  It ranks 67 out of 88 in population in the state.  It has a density of 64.9 persons per square mile making it 77 out of 88 in the state.  Coshocton County has 40.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 36 crosses through the county from east to west from Tuscarawas County to Knox County.  The county is a rectangle with a nose sticking out of the east.  The county seat is located slightly east and south of center in the county.  Coshocton is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 30.2% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced KO-SHOK-TON.  This county is in the Coshocton Micropolitan Statistical Area.
