A Modern red brick and concrete courthouse replaced a Classical Revival 1868 structure.   The new courthouse is at Sandusky and Court streets.  Ohio State Highway 37 is one block south of the site.  The building was built in 2017 using the designs of Silling Architects.  There was an 1816 courthouse also in Delaware, the only county seat.  The county was organized on April 1, 1808 from Franklin County as the 33rd county.  The county and county seat are named for the Native American tribe.  Delaware County is the birthplace of 2 Ohio Governors, Rutherford B. Hayes and Frank B. Willis. 

Delaware County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Four Common Pleas Court Judges serve Delaware County.  The county is in central Ohio.  The geographical center of Ohio is 25 miles north-northeast of Columbus in the county.  Columbus, Ohio is directly south and Cleveland, Ohio is northeast of the county.  The county center is in Delaware 2 miles East-Northeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Morrow, Knox, Licking, Franklin, Union, and Marion counties. 

The area of the county is 442.4 square miles.  It is 43 out of 88 in the state.  It ranks 13 out of 88 in population in the state.  It has a density of 484.0 persons per square mile making it 13 out of 88 in the state.  Delaware County has 44.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 71 comes into the county from the northeast, Morrow County, and goes to the south, Franklin County.  United States Highway 23 passes north to south from Marion County to Franklin County.  United States Highway 36 enters from the east, Knox County, and exits to the west, Union County.  United States Highway 42 crosses northeast to southwest from Morrow County to Union County.  Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th President, was born in this county.  The county resembles a double headed arrow pointing northwest and southeast.  The City of Delaware is located in the western third of the county.  Delaware is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 19.3% of the county population.  This county is in the Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area.
