The Classical Revival structure was built with masonry in 1911. The courthouse is on Market Street between Broadman and Front streets. Four blocks south of the courthouse, Interstate Highway 680 passes through the city. The building was restored in 1991. Charles F. Owsley provided the designs. The structure features columns and statues on top. There was also an 1876 building. Canfield was the first county seat until 1875 when Youngstown assumed the position. The county was organized on March 1, 1846 from parts of Columbiana and Trumbull counties as the 83rd county. The county’s name is Native American for “salt lick.” Youngstown is named for settler John Young. Mahoning County is the birthplace of 1 Ohio Governor, David Tod.

Eight Common Pleas Court Judges and a court clerk serve Mahoning County (judicial.) Mahoning County is on the eastern border with Pennsylvania. Cleveland, Ohio is northwest and Columbus, Ohio is southwest of the county. The county center is 9.9 miles Southwest of Youngstown nearer Calla. The county is surrounded clockwise by Trumbull County and Pennsylvania and Columbiana, Stark, and Portage counties.

It has a density of 550.5 persons per square mile making it 12 out of 88 in the state. Mahoning County has 42.9% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 76 travels through the county from Pennsylvania, east, to Portage County, west. Interstate Highway 80 comes from Trumbull County, north and return to Trumbull County, northwest. United States Highway 62 enters from the north, Trumbull County, and exits to the south, Columbiana County. United States Highway 224 passes from Pennsylvania, east, to Portage County, west. United States Highway 422 comes from Pennsylvania and goes to Trumbull County. The county resembles a truck heading west. Youngstown is located in the northeast quarter of the county and extends into Trumbull County. Youngstown is the county seat and the largest city. It is 26.3% of the county population. The county is pronounced MA-HOE-NING. This county is in the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman Metropolitan Statistical Area.
