The red brick Greek Revival courthouse was erected in 1844 on the square surrounded by Park, Croghan, Clover, and Court streets.  United States Highway 20 Business is three blocks to the north.  Cyrus Williams provided the courthouse designs.  The building was enlarged in 1870 and remodeled and enlarged again in 1936.  It features columns and a tower.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds and a park is across the street.  The county was organized on April 1, 1820 from Huron County as the 66th county with Fremont as the only county seat.  It is named for the Native American word meaning “cold water.”  It is the same source name for the county seat of Erie County.  Fremont is named for the explorer John C. Fremont. 

Sandusky County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Four Common Pleas Court Judges serve Sandusky County.  Sandusky County is in the northwest part of Ohio.  Toledo, Ohio is northwest and Cleveland, Ohio is east of the county.  The county center is 3 miles North-Northwest of Fremont.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Ottawa, Erie, Huron, Seneca, and Wood counties. 

The area of the county is 409.2 square miles.  It is 68 out of 88 in the state.  It ranks 43 out of 88 in population in the state.  It has a density of 143.9 persons per square mile making it 34 out of 88 in the state.  Sandusky County has 55.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highways 80/90 cross through the county from east to northwest, Erie County to Ottawa County.  United States Highway 6 goes east to west from Erie County to Wood County.  United States Highway 20 parallels Interstate Highway 80 Huron County to Wood County.  United States Highway 23 follows the western border from Wood County to Seneca County.  Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th President, is buried in this county.  The county is overall rectangular with a chimney sticking up from the northwest corner.  Fremont is located near the center of the county.  Fremont is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 27.0% of the county population.  This county is in the Fremont Micropolitan Statistical Area.
