The red brick Italianate courthouse was erected in 1866 and remodeled and enlarged in 1909.  It is Market Street between 2nd and 3rd streets.  United States Highway 23 is one block west of the courthouse.  The Pike County Committee designed the building.  A Government Center has been added to augment the courthouse.  It features a tower.  Piketon was the first county seat until 1861 when Waverly assumed the position.  The county was created on February 1, 1815 from Ross, Scioto, and Adams counties as the 46th county.  The county is named for explorer Zebulon Pike.  Waverly is named for Sir Walter Scott Waverly. 

Pike County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Four Common Pleas Court Judges serve Pike County.  The county is located in southern Ohio.  Columbus, Ohio is north and Cincinnati, Ohio is west of the county.  The county center is 4.8 miles Southwest of Waverly nearer Piketon.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Ross, Jackson, Scioto, Adams, and Highland counties. 

The area of the county is 441.5 square miles.  It is 44 out of 88 in the state.  It ranks 79 out of 88 in population in the state.  It has a density of 61.4 persons per square mile making it 79 out of 88 in the state.  Pike County has 24.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 23 travels through the county north to south from Ross County to Scioto County.  The county is a rectangle with its southwest corner cut away.  The county seat is located in the northeast quarter of the county.  Waverly is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 15.4% of the county population.
