The stone Greek Revival building was erected in 1856 on Mansfield at Walnut streets.  Ohio State Highway 19 is Walnut Street in the town.  The building was enlarged in 1893 and extensively remodeled in 1908.  O. S. Kinney was the original architect.  The building features columns and a tower with working clock.  The grounds have veteran memorials and a canon.  An Administration Building is connected.  The county was formed on April 1, 1820 from Delaware County as the 58th county.  Bucyrus has always the county seat.  The county is named for American Revolution Colonel William Crawford.  Bucyrus is a combination of the French for “beautiful” and the Persian leader, Cyrus. 

Crawford County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  One Common Pleas Court Judge serves Crawford County.  The county is in the northern part of the state.  Columbus, Ohio is south and Cleveland, Ohio is northeast of the county.  The county center is 7.1 miles East-Northeast of Bucyrus nearer Sulphur Springs.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Huron, Richland, Morrow, Marion, Wyandot, and Seneca counties. 

The area of the county is 402.1 square miles.  It is 79 out of 88 in the state.  It ranks 60 out of 88 in population in the state.  It has a density of 104.5 persons per square mile making it 52 out of 88 in the state.  Crawford County has 67.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 30 passes through the county from east to west from Richland County to Wyandot County.  The county is a rectangle.  Bucyrus is located in the southwest quarter of the county.  Bucyrus is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 27.8% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced BUE-SEER-US.  This county is in the Bucyrus Micropolitan Statistical Area.
