The classic Second Empire stone and masonry courthouse was erected in 1882.  An 1830 version preceded this one also in Washington Court House, the only county seat.  The courthouse is in a square surrounded by Court Street at Main Street.  United States Highway 22 is Court Street in the town.  David W. Gibbs & Company provided the building designs.  The structure features a tower with a working clock and a gold Lady Justice statue on top.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  The county was created on March 1, 1810 from parts of Ross and Highland counties as the 38th county.  Fayette County is named for American Revolutionary War General Marquis de Lafayette.  The county seat is named for United States President George Washington.  He is also the namesake of Washington County. 

Fayette County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Two Common Pleas Court Judges serve Fayette County.  The county is situated in southwest Ohio.  Columbus, Ohio is northeast and Cincinnati, Ohio is southwest of the county.  The county center is 4.4 miles North-Northwest of Washington Court House nearer Eber.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Madison, Pickaway, Ross, Highland, Clinton, and Greene counties. 

The area of the county is 406.6 square miles.  It is 72 out of 88 in the state.  It ranks 74 out of 88 in population in the state.  It has a density of 71.2 persons per square mile making it 70 out of 88 in the state.  Fayette County has 58.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 71 travels through the county from north to west from Madison County to Greene County.  United States Highway 35 enters from Greene County, west, and exits to Ross County, southeast.  United States Highway 62 passes north to south from Madison County to Highland County.  The county is a fat number 7.  Washington Court House is located in the southern third of the county.  Washington Court House is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 49.8% of the county population.  This county is in the Washington Court House Micropolitan Statistical Area.
