The tan brick courthouse was built in 1868 and remodeled in 1954.  It is on Main and Broadway streets.  Main Street is Ohio State Highway 139.  R. C. Saunders designed this Greek Revival structure.  The courthouse features a tower with a working clock and columns.  Veteran memorials are down the street.  The county was established on March 1, 1816 from parts of Scioto, Gallia, Athens, and Ross counties as the 48th county with Jackson as the only county seat.  The county and county seat are named for United States President Andrew Jackson.  Jackson County is the birthplace of 1 Ohio Governor, James A. Rhodes. 

Jackson County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Two Common Pleas Court Judges serve Jackson County.  The county is in southern Ohio.  Columbus, Ohio is north and Cincinnati, Ohio is west of the county.  The county center is 3.6 miles South of Jackson.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Vinton, Gallia, Lawrence, Scioto, Pike, and Ross counties. 

The area of the county is 420.3 square miles.  It is 54 out of 88 in the state.  It ranks 71 out of 88 in population in the state.  It has a density of 77.7 persons per square mile making it 68 out of 88 in the state.  Jackson County has 41.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 35 crosses the county from northwest to southeast from Ross County to Gallia County.  The county looks like a pack of cigarettes.  The City of Jackson is located in the western third of the county.  Jackson is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 19.2% of the county population.
