The classic stone Second Empire courthouse in Cadiz was built in 1895 on a hill on Lincoln, Main and Court streets.  United States Highway 250 is Lincoln Street in the town.  Joseph Warren Yost and Frank L. Packard are the courthouse designers.  The building was renovated in 1993.  The structure features a dome with a working clock, columns, and Lady Justice.  Veteran memorials are in front on the grounds as are canons.  There was an 1819 version of the courthouse also in Cadiz, the only county seat.  The county was founded on February 1, 1813 from parts of Jefferson and Tuscarawas counties as the 45th county.  Harrison County is named for United States President William Henry Harrison.  The county seat is named for Cadiz, Spain. 

Harrison County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Three Common Pleas Court Judges serve Harrison County.  The county is in eastern Ohio.  Cleveland, Ohio is northwest and Columbus, Ohio is west of the county.  The county center is 9.8 miles Northwest of Cadiz nearer Deersville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Carroll, Jefferson, Belmont, Guernsey, and Tuscarawas counties. 

The area of the county is 403.5 square miles.  It is 78 out of 88 in the state.  It ranks 84 out of 88 in population in the state.  It has a density of 35.9 persons per square mile making it 84 out of 88 in the state.  Harrison County has 44.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 22 passes northeast to southwest in the county from Jefferson County to Guernsey County.  United States Highway 250 enters from the northwest, Tuscarawas County, and exits to the southeast, Jefferson County.  The county is an overall rectangle with a foot sticking out of the southwest corner.  The county seat is located in the southeast quarter of the county.  Cadiz is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 21.1% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced KA-DIZ.
