The Modern steel and concrete building was erected in 1964.  The structure is on Perry Street between 2nd and 3rd streets.  Ohio State Highway 4 passes in front of the facility.  Lorenz & Williams and Pretzinger & Pretzinger combined for the building designs.  There was an 1850 also in Dayton, the only county seat.  The Courts Building was added in 1989 and an Administrative Building in 1972.  Montgomery County was founded on May 1, 1803 from parts of Hamilton and Wayne counties as the 16th county.  It is named for American Revolutionary War General Richard Montgomery.  The county seat is named for founder Jonathan Dayton. 

Montgomery County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Sixteen Common Pleas Court Judges serve Montgomery County.  The county is in southwest Ohio.  Columbus, Ohio is east and Cincinnati, Ohio is south of the county.  The county center is in Dayton 1.7 miles West-Southwest of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Miami, Clark, Greene, Warren, Butler, Preble, and Darke counties. 

The area of the county is 461.7 square miles.  It is 37 out of 88 in the state.  It ranks 5 out of 88 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1163.8 persons per square mile making it 6 out of 88 in the state.  Montgomery County has 78.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 70 goes east to west in the county from Clark County to Preble County.  Interstate Highway 75 passes north to south from Miami County to Warren County.  United States Highway 35 travels from Greene County, east, to Preble County, west.  United States Highway 40 parallels Interstate Highway 70 from Miami to Preble counties.  The county resembles a coffee creamer facing east.  Dayton dominates the eastern part of the county.  Dayton is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 25.6% of the county population.  This county is in the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area.
