The 1998 red brick and concrete Modern Federalist and Greek Revival courthouse is on Main at Market streets.  Steinkamp, Steinkamp, and Hampton are the building architects.  The building has faux columns and a stained-glass window with a county map.  Veteran memorials and a Liberty bell are on the grounds.  Williamsburg had an 1800 courthouse and Batavia had an 1829 facility.  New Richmond was the county seat 1817-1824 between Williamsburg and Batavia.  Ohio State Highway 132 passes in front of the courthouse.  A County Administration building was built next door in 1995 to augment the courthouse.  The county was established on December 6, 1800 from Hamilton County as the 8th county.  The county name is French for “clear mountain.”  Batavia is named for Batavia, New York.  Clermont County is the birthplace of 1 Ohio Governor, John M. Pattison. 

Clermont County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Seven Common Pleas Court Judges serve Clermont County.  The county is in the southwest part of Ohio.  Cincinnati, Ohio is northwest and Columbus, Ohio is northeast of the county.  The Ohio River forms its southern border with Kentucky.  The county center is 1.9 miles South of Batavia.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Warren, Clinton, and Brown counties and Kentucky and Hamilton County. 

The area of the county is 452.0 square miles.  It is 42 out of 88 in the state.  It ranks 14 out of 88 in population in the state.  It has a density of 461.5 persons per square mile making it 14 out of 88 in the state.  Clermont County has 10.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 50 crosses the county from east to west from Brown County to Hamilton County.  United States Highway 52 parallels the Ohio River east to west from Brown County to Hamilton County.  Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President, was born in this county.  The county looks like a slab of marble.  Batavia is located slightly west of center in the county.  Milford is on the northwest border of the county and extends into Hamilton County.  Batavia is the county seat and Milford is the largest city.  Batavia is 1.0% of the county population while Milford is 3.2% of the county population.  The county is pronounced KLER-MONT.  This county is in the Cincinnati-Middletown Metropolitan Statistical Area.
