A masonry Neo-Classical building was erected in 1925.  The courthouse is at the intersection of Main and Market streets.  Ohio State Highway 93 is one block to the east of the facility.  Frank L. Packard and Snyder, Babbitt and Mathews designed the courthouse.  The facility features columns and a gazebo.  Across the street are veteran memorials.  The county was established on March 1, 1818 from parts of Athens, Ross, and Fairfield counties as the 52nd county.  Logan has always been the county seat.  Hocking County is named for the river which is a Native American word meaning “bottle river.”  An 1845 courthouse was there earlier.  The county seat is named for a Native American chief. 

Hocking County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Three Common Pleas Court Judges serve Hocking County.  Hocking County is in the southern part of Ohio.  Columbus, Ohio is northwest and Cincinnati, Ohio is southwest of the county.  The county center is 6.7 miles Southwest of Logan nearer Ewing.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Perry, Athens, Vinton, Ross, Pickaway, and Fairfield counties. 

The area of the county is 422.8 square miles.  It is 52 out of 88 in the state.  It ranks 76 out of 88 in population in the state.  It has a density of 66.4 persons per square mile making it 75 out of 88 in the state.  Hocking County has 29.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 33 goes northwest to southeast in the county from Fairfield County to Athens County.  The county looks like a military tank with extra bumps on the top.  Logan is located in the northeast quarter of the county.  Logan is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 26.0% of the county population.
