The 1894 stone and masonry Neo-Classical courthouse stands out in this community. The facility is on the town square on Willipie, Pearl, Perry, and Mechanic streets. Pearl Street is Ohio State Highway 67 in the town. Julius Kremer and Hart are the architects. The courthouse features columns and stained-glass arches. The grounds have veteran memorials. An Administration Building was added in 2003 and the courthouse was renovated in 2012. There was an 1854 courthouse earlier also in Wapakoneta, the only county seat. The county was organized on February 14, 1848 from parts of Allen, Mercer, Darke, Hardin, Logan, Shelby, and Van Wert counties as the 84th county. Auglaize County is named for the river which is a Native American word for “fallen timbers.” The county seat is named for a Native American chief.

Interstate Highway 75 crosses north to south in the county from Allen County to Shelby County. United States Highway 33 comes from Logan County, southeast, and goes into Mercer County, west. The county is shaped like a pistol pointing east. The county seat is located slightly north of center in the county. Wapakoneta is the county seat and the largest city. It is 21.4% of the county population. The county is pronounced A-GLAEZ. The county seat is pronounced WA-PA-KO-NET-A. This county is in the Wapakoneta Micropolitan Statistical Area.
