A domed Greek Revival structure is the 1854 courthouse which was remodeled in 1897.  The structure is located on Broad Street between Queen and Church streets.  New York State Highway 14 is two blocks to the east of the location.  Henry Searl provided the designs.  The building was enlarged in 1957 and a Hall of Justice was added in 1996.  The county was formed on April 11, 1823 from Seneca and Ontario counties as the 55th county with Lyons as the only county seat.  The county is named for American Revolutionary War General Anthony Wayne.  Lyons is named for Lyon, France. 

Wayne County government consists of a sheriff and 13 Supervisors.  One County Court Judge, One Family Court Judge, and One Surrogate Court Judge serve Wayne County.  The county is on the northern border with Lake Ontario.  Buffalo, New York is southwest and Albany, New York is east of the county.  The county center is 7.7 miles Northwest of Lyons.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Canada and Cayuga, Seneca, Ontario, and Monroe counties. 

The area of the county is 1384 square miles.  It is 11 out of 62 in the state.  It ranks 31 out of 62 in population in the state.  It has a density of 66.0 persons per square mile making it 46 out of 62 in the state.  Wayne County has 21.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  Wayne County is an overall rectangle.  Lyons is located near the southern border of the county.  Newark is directly west of Lyons.  Lyons is the county seat and Newark is the largest city.  Lyons is 4.0% of the county population while Newark is 10.0% of the county population.  This county is in the Rochester Metropolitan Statistical Area.
