A modern steel and concrete 1933 building stands on Grand Concourse at East 159th Street.  Interstate Highway 87 is six blocks to the west of the courthouse.  Bronx County was created on January 1, 1895 from Westchester County as the 61st county.  Max Hausel and Joseph H. Freedlander designed the courthouse.  A 1914 courthouse also was located in the Bronx.  There is a Hall of Justice (2007) and Criminal Courthouse (1977) augmenting the main courthouse.  Bronx County and its county seat are named for the Bronx River.  Bronx County was the birthplace for 2 New York Governors, C. Malcolm Wilson and Eliot L. Spitzer.  Like all of the New York City counties, there is not a distinction for the county seat other than the neighborhood in which the courthouse is located.

Bronx County government consists of a sheriff, a President, and 12 Board Members.  Ninety-two City Court Judges serve Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, and Richmond counties and Nine Family Court Judges serve Bronx County.  The county is in the southeast tip of the state.  It is the northern most county making up New York City.  Newark, New Jersey is southeast and Albany, New York is north of the county.  The county center is in the Bronx section of New York City .7 miles South of the downtown.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Westchester, Nassau, Queens, and New York counties and New Jersey.

The area of the county is 57 square miles.  It is 61 out of 62 in the state.  It ranks 5 out of 62 in population in the state.  It has a density of 25836.1 persons per square mile making it 3 out of 62 in the state.  Bronx County has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 87 enters the county from Westchester County, north, and terminates.  Interstate Highway 95 comes from Westchester County, north, and goes into New York County, west.  United States Highway 1 parallels Interstate Highway 95 from Westchester to New York counties.  United States Highway 9 enters from Westchester County, north, and exits into New York County.  The county looks like the Liberty Bell bent toward the southeast.  Bronx County and the Bronx section of New York City are the same therefore there is no separate largest city.  The county seat functions in the Bronx section of New York City.  Bronx County is 16.7% of New York City’s population.  The county and county seat are pronounced BRONKS.  This county is in the New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island Metropolitan Statistical Area.
