The red brick Greek Revival courthouse for Orleans County was constructed in 1858.  The structure is on a square at Main, State, Park, and Platt streets.  New York State Highway 98 is Main Street in the town.  The building was renovated in 1928 and restored in 2003.  There was an 1827 courthouse previously.  The 1888 Clerk’s Office Building augments the courthouse.  The county was created on January 1, 1824 from Genesee County as the 56th county with Albion as the only county seat.  It is named for the French House of Orleans.  Albion is the ancient word for England.  William V. N. Barlow was the courthouse designer. 

Orleans County government consists of a sheriff and 7 Legislators.  One County Court Judge serves Orleans County.  The county is in the northwest part of the state.  Buffalo, New York is southwest and Albany, New York is east of the county.  The county center is 2 miles West-Northwest of Albion.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Canada and Monroe, Genesee, and Niagara counties. 

The area of the county is 817 square miles.  It is 31 out of 62 in the state.  It ranks 55 out of 62 in population in the state.  It has a density of 49.4 persons per square mile making it 53 out of 62 in the state.  Orleans County has 35.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  The county is an overall rectangle.  Albion is located slightly east of center in the county.  Medina is in the west half of the county.  Albion is the county seat and Medina is the largest city.  Albion is 14.1% of the county population while Medina is 15.0% of the county population.  This county is in the Rochester Metropolitan Statistical Area.
